kincogish

kincogish (Ir. cin comocuis, ‘the offence of a kinsman’) is a term referring to the liability of a kinsman to pay compensation if an offender has evaded payment or has been unable to pay. Similarly, it was possible to distrain a kinsman if pressure could not be brought on a defendant directly. Because this principle by which kinsmen were contingently liable for each other's offences was strange to Anglo‐Norman settlers, it was known by the Anglicized Irish term ‘kincogish’.
