fiants are warrants to chancery authorizing the issue of letters patent, named from the opening of the document, ‘Fiant literae patentes’ (let letters patent be made). Most were issued by the lord deputy on his own authority or that of a king' letter. A few were issued by royal commissions or, under Henry VIII, by the king. The fiants were destroyed in 1922 (see public records) but calendars of those for Henry VIII to Elizabeth were published in 7th to 21st Reports of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records in Ireland while those for James I and Charles I were calendared by the Irish record commissioners.
