ether drinking was introduced to Ireland in the 1840s, primarily for its supposed medicinal benefits. Ether was also occasionally taken recreationally. By the 1870s its use was more widespread. In some areas ether was now used solely as an intoxicant, often mixed with alcohol. During the 1880s its use became endemic in Cos. Londonderry and Tyrone, encouraged by a decline in the availability of cheap liquor. A select committee examined the problem in 1890–1. From December 1890 ether was scheduled as a poison and became less readily available. In 1923 ether drinking became a criminal offence in Northern Ireland.
