electoral amendment bill

electoral amendment bill (1927). Introduced after the assassination of Kevin O'Higgins, this required parliamentary candidates to swear that if returned they would take the oath of allegiance, and provided for the removal of elected members who refused to do so. In response Fianna Fáil deputies abandoned abstentionism and took their seats. Cosgrave and other Cumann na nGaedheal ministers have been praised for thus forcing their main rivals to enter Dáil Éireann. But they may have hoped to provoke a split in the new party on the issue of the oath.
