democratic programme

democratic programme, one of the four major documents approved by Dáil Éireann at its first meeting on 21 January 1919, setting out its social and economic objectives. It was drafted by William O'Brien and Thomas Johnson of the Labour Party, and amended by Sean T. O'Kelly of Sinn Féin. The introduction of this fairly socialistic document was partly to reward Labour for its decision not to field candidates in the 1918 election, and partly to assist the successful Irish claim to self‐determination at the International Socialist Conference in Berne. Although generally ignored by Sinn Féin and its inheritors, the document was to be appealed to by later supporters of a synthesis of republicanism and socialism.
