Young, Arthur (1741–1820), agriculturalist and writer. Born in London, the son of a clergyman, he began his writing career in 1758, producing a variety of political pamphlets and novels. In 1763 he briefly took up farming, and in 1767 published the first of many agricultural pamphlets. In 1776, following the success of published accounts of his tours in England, he visited Ireland. The following year he returned to Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, as the agent of Lord Kingsborough. He stayed for two years, during which time he toured Ireland extensively, and collected material for A Tour in Ireland (1780). Described by Maria Edgeworth as the most reliable portrait of the Irish peasantry ever printed, it remains the most widely quoted source for the social history of 18th‐century Ireland.
