Ulster king of arms (established 1552), the official who oversaw
heraldry in Ireland. Ulster, assisted by deputy Ulster and the Athlone pursuivant, granted and confirmed coats of arms and ensured correct use of insignia. His initial function of checking pedigrees to ensure entitlement expanded to take in authenticating and even falsifying genealogies for Irishmen in
foreign armies in the 18th century, and dealing with the complicated claims to peerages at home in the 19th. Other duties included recording deaths of peers, overseeing protocol at their funerals, and authorizing admissions to the House of
Lords. The herald's original medieval function survived in a responsibility to organize state occasions and to make formal announcements. When
de Valera established the Genealogical Office (1943), under a chief herald of Ireland ( Dr Edward MacLysaght), the Ulster king of arms was incorporated into the College of Arms, London.
