Theobald Walter

Theobald Walter (d. 1205), founder of the Butler family in Ireland, who derived their name from Theobald's honorific office of butler in the household of John, lord of Ireland, later king of England. In 1185 Theobald accompanied John to Ireland and received extensive grants of land in north Munster, and subsequently also in Leinster. His title of pincerna is attested in charters issued by John in Ireland in 1185.
