Sullivan, Alexander Martin (1829–84), one of the foremost propagandists of Irish nationalism. As proprietor of the Nation 1855–74 Sullivan created a series of ancillary titles and, with his brothers Timothy Daniel and Donal, conducted a multifaceted publication enterprise with productions including Speeches from the Dock (1867). His Story of Ireland (1870) is a myth‐making classic. New Ireland (1877) reflects the more open‐minded attitude that he developed while living in London as an MP for Louth (1874–80) and Meath (1880–2).
