Stone, George (c.1708–1764), political prelate. A Londoner, Stone came to Ireland as chaplain to the duke of Dorset, lord lieutenant 1730–7, and rose rapidly in the Church of Ireland to become archbishop of Armagh 1747. Following the return of his patron Dorset as lord lieutenant in 1750, Stone began a power struggle with Henry Boyle, presenting himself to English ministers as working to break the power of the undertakers who had usurped control of Irish affairs. Temporarily isolated following the government's settlement with Boyle, Stone re‐emerged from 1758 as a powerful undertaker in his own right, now willing to defy the London government when popular Irish interests were at stake.
