Smerwick, massacre of

Smerwick, massacre of (10 Nov. 1580). Six hundred Spanish and Italian troops sent by the pope during the Desmond revolt fortified Dún an Óir in Smerwick Bay on the Dingle Peninsula. Lord Deputy Grey, having forced their surrender, massacred the garrison and its Irish accomplices, excepting fifteen leaders for ransom. Zealously Protestant, Grey feared the Catholic threat and intended the action as an example to future in‐vaders and Irish allies; Queen Elizabeth I approved his actions.
