Síl nÁedo Sláine

Síl nÁedo Sláine were one of the two major southern Uí Néill dynasties. Their eponymous forebear, Áed Sláine, was reputedly a great‐great‐grandson of Niall Noígiallach, but their most famous ancestor was Áed's father Diarmait mac Cerbaill, who was also the progenitor of the neighbouring Clann Colmáin. The Síl nÁedo Sláine were based in modern Co. Meath with foci at Dunshaughlin, Knowth, and Oristown. They dominated the kingship of Tara (see high kingship) in the second half of the 7th century, lost power to their Clann Cholmáin relatives in the later 8th, and had a brief resurgence in the mid‐10th century under Congalach Cnogba (d. 956).
