Simnel, Lambert (b.
c.1475), crowned ‘ Edward VI’ in Dublin 1487. Later said to be the son of an Oxford joiner, Simnel was brought to Ireland early in 1487, apparently at the instigation of Edward IV's sister Margaret of Burgundy, and presented as Edward, earl of Warwick (1475–99), son of George, duke of Clarence, and the potential Yorkist rival (see
wars of the roses) of Henry VII. To disprove this Warwick himself, then Henry's prisoner, was paraded in London. Nevertheless, after the landing at Dublin on 5 May of 2,000 troops raised by Margaret and accompanied by her nephew John de la Pole, earl of Lincoln, Simnel was crowned in
Christ Church cathedral on 24 May. Government proceeded in his name, Gerald, 8th earl of
Kildare, acting as his lieutenant, despite initial opposition from the town of Waterford. On 4 June a Yorkist army sailed for England, but was defeated on 16 June at Stoke. Captured there, Simnel became a royal scullion.
