Sheil, Richard Lalor

Sheil, Richard Lalor (1791–1851), politician and playwright. Born in Co. Kilkenny, the son of a merchant and landowner, he was a leading supporter of the veto, whose reconciliation with O'Connell in 1823 opened the way for the successful campaign for Catholic emancipation. As MP for Co. Louth 1831–3, Co. Tipperary 1833–41, and Dungarven 1841–51, he initially pledged himself to support repeal, but drifted into support for the Whig Party, from which he accepted a succession of minor offices after 1837, culminating in the positions of master of the mint (1846) and ambassador to the Tuscan court (1850).
