Shaw, George Bernard (1856–1950), playwright and socialist. His upbringing in a shabby‐genteel family produced lasting dislike of Dublin. Shaw moved to London in 1876 as a journalist. He became a socialist, prominent in the Fabian Society, which advocated gradual social reform through administrative professionalism. From the 1890s he achieved fame as a playwright, becoming one of the most widely read authors of the first half of the 20th century; his work was popular for its irreverent humour, though often accused of loving ideas but fearing emotion. Though he was personally generous, belief in the rational reordering of society and disgust at social chaos led Shaw to endorse eugenics and praise interwar European dictators as harsh but necessary experimenters. Shaw stressed his Irishness as a clearsighted outsider in British society, and maintained a semi‐detached relationship with the Irish
literary revival; he bequeathed his fortune to the British Museum and the National Gallery of Ireland.
