Schomberg, Frederick Herman, duke of

Schomberg, Frederick Herman, duke of (1615–90), William III's first commander in the Williamite War. A German Protestant mercenary of international reputation, he landed at Bangor Bay, Co. Down, on 13 August 1689, with 14,500 men. He advanced south to Dundalk but declined to engage an opposing army under James II, retiring instead to winter quarters at Blaris (Lisburn), Co. Antrim, where disease (dysentery and possibly typhus) wiped out up to half his army. His failure to make progress cost him William's favour. He was killed at the battle of the Boyne, but his burial place in Christ Church cathedral remained unmarked until Swift erected a plaque there in 1731.
