Russell, Sean

Russell, Sean (1893–1940). As IRA chief of staff Russell was responsible for the bombing campaign in Great Britain in 1939–40. He was representative of those traditional republicans who believed that only physical force could bring a 32‐country republic. His appointment as chief of staff was a final attempt to make the organization relevant after years of splits and inaction. As one of the last veterans of the rising of 1916 left in the IRA he went to the USA to raise funds for the bombing campaign. He ended up in Nazi Germany to drum up support, but died aboard a German submarine on his way back to Ireland.
