Phoenix Park murders (6 May 1882), the assassination with surgical knives of the newly appointed Irish
chief secretary, Lord Frederick Cavendish, and the under‐secretary, T. H. Burke, carried out by the
Invincibles. Horrifying British opinion, the murders forced
Gladstone to maintain coercion in Ireland at a time when, following the
Kilmainham treaty, it was about to be dropped, and impelled a depressed
Parnell momentarily to consider resigning from parliament.
