O'Sullivan Beare, Philip

O'Sullivan Beare, Philip, Catholic historian, poet, and polemicist, born in Co. Cork in the 1590s and last heard of in Portugal in the 1630s. O'Sullivan Beare's major work, Historiae Catholiciae Iberniae compendium (1621), is an important reflection of Irish Counter‐Reformation mentality, with miracles, prophecy, and providence to the fore. This patriotic history gives pride of place to the role of his own family—his uncle Donal O'Sullivan's heroic defence of Dunboy and epic wintertime march to Leitrim after the defeat at Kinsale. He launched scathing attacks on Gerald of Wales, Richard Stanihurst, and James Ussher, wrote hagiographies of St Patrick and St Mochua, and included an early account of Irish flora and fauna in his Zoilomastix, written in 1625.
