O'Leary, John (1830–1907). Born into a Catholic middle‐class family in Co. Tipperary, O'Leary was associated with the
Young Ireland movement, and briefly imprisoned in 1848. Although he refused to take the
Fenian oath, he travelled to America on Fenian business and was joint editor of the
Irish People, joining with
Kickham in a sustained polemic against clerical interference in politics. He was imprisoned 1865–74 then lived in exile in Paris until permitted to return to Ireland in 1885, where he became an important influence on
Yeats and other leaders of the
literary revival.
