O'Hanlon, Redmond (1640–81), the leading Ulster Tory of the Restoration period, subsequently a figure in popular legend. A former tax collector turned outlaw, O'Hanlon was active in Armagh and surrounding counties from at least 1674, until shot by a confederate and foster brother. Contemporary and later references to ‘Count Hanlon’ may have originated with inaccurate French reports of his exploits, or may reflect a persona adopted by O'Hanlon himself.
