O'Flaherty, Roderick

O'Flaherty, Roderick (1629–1718), a historian trained under John Lynch and Duald MacFirbis, impoverished by the Cromwellian land confiscations. O'Flaherty contributed a much‐quoted description of his native Iar Connacht to a survey of Ireland co‐ordinated in 1684 by William Molyneux. O'Flaherty's most famous work was Ogygia, seu rerum Hibernicarum chronologia (1685). Dedicated to James II, it attempted to apply the recent developments in chronology to the mythological period of Irish history, to argue that the kingdom of Ireland was older than those of Scotland and England, and to elaborate on existing accounts of the Irish descent of the Stuart kings.
