O'Donovan Rossa, Jeremiah

O'Donovan Rossa, Jeremiah (1831–1915). A grocer in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, he founded in 1856 a literary and political group, the Phoenix Society, which was absorbed into the Fenian movement. Imprisoned 1865–71, he went to America, where he organized a ‘skirmishing fund’ to finance terrorist operations, and later directed the first nationalist bombing campaign in mainland Britain during 1881–5. His funeral at Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin, following his death in New York, provided the occasion for a notable graveside oration by Patrick Pearse.
