O'Donnell, Peadar

O'Donnell, Peadar (1893–1986), socialist‐republican, activist, and writer. O'Donnell started off as a trade union organizer but became involved in the IRA during the Anglo‐Irish War. A lifelong and prominent career in various republican and socialist organizations, including Saor Éire and Republican Congress, followed. His concern for the oppressed and his belief that only socialism could bring a fully independent republic to Ireland is reflected in his writings as editor of radical journals like An Phoblacht and The Bell, and in his novels and short stories, often depicting the harsh conditions of rural life in his native Co. Donegal.
