O'Donnell, Calvach

O'Donnell, Calvach (d. 1566), a weak lord of Tirconnell whose control depended on external support. He ousted his father Manus O'Donnell in 1555, with the assistance of an expeditionary force and a large siege‐gun from the earl of Argyll. In 1561 Shane O'Neill captured Calvach and his wife Catherine Maclean. Shane made Catherine his mistress and moved Calvach, manacled, around Tyrone to prevent his rescue. Released in 1564, he travelled to Dublin and London seeking redress. Sidney restored him to his patrimony in 1566. Calvach died in a riding accident before receiving the crown charter creating him earl of Tyrconnell.
