O'Connor Faly ( Ó Conchobhair Failghe). By the mid‐11th century the O'Connor Faly lordship was established in the central midlands region.
Anglo‐Norman settlement and colonization in the 13th century confined the lordship to the area that corresponds to present north Co. Offaly. By the late 14th century a strong dynastic line emerged under Murrough O'Connor Faly (d. 1421), consolidated by his son Calvagh (ruled 1425–58). The second half of the 15th century saw the temporary decline of O'Connor's regional influence, and internecine succession disputes, due in part to the lack of strong internal lordship between 1458 and 1520. A related factor was the rise of the
Kildare ascendancy after the 1470s. The Kildare earls reduced O'Connor Faly to a client jurisdiction, and between 1511 and 1520 appointed their own candidates as lords of Offaly. The emergence of Brian O'Connor in 1520 marked the return of strong lordship. Brian renegotiated his client status with Kildare, based on the Offaly lordships' militarily strategic position on the borders of the
Pale. The alliance was crucial to Geraldine unrest and rebellion between 1528 and 1535 (see
kildare rebellion). The O'Connor Faly remained loyal to the Geraldine affinity even after the attainder of the Kildare earls. The government's scheme for the
plantation of Offaly and Laois enacted in 1557 removed O'Connor Faly's land base, and eroded their power in the region.
