Niall Noígiallach (‘Niall of the Nine Hostages’), eponymous ancestor of the Uí Néill, reputed to have flourished in the early 5th century. The earliest traditions about his career are 9th century in date, when he was remembered as a raider of Britain. The texts ascribe the nine hostages to varying locations in Ireland, Britain, and the Continent. In genealogical and saga materials, he is identified as brother to the ancestor of the Connachta kings.
