New Departure

New Departure, a compact arrived at between Parnell, Davitt, and the Fenian leader John Devoy in June 1879 which provided the basis for the effective prosecution of the Land War. It was predicated on the acceptance that a fundamental link existed between the land and national questions; but there were unarticulated differences about the nature of that link. The Fenian case was that no Westminster government would solve the land question on the tenants' terms and that realization of this would produce mass support for their republican objective. Parnell, while giving the impression that he concurred in this view, believed that under sufficient pressure Westminster would make an adequate settlement, one that would further his own, more realistic, objective of home rule. The New Departure maximized Parnell's ability to engage all shades of nationalist opinion in the agrarian struggle of 1879–82.
