Monaghan, partition of (1590–1). In September 1590 Hugh Roe MacMahon was executed for breaking his surrender and regrant agreement amid allegations of bribery, broken promises, and tyrannical government by Fitzwilliam. The lordship was divided between seven chief lords and 287 freeholders, each holding from the crown by letters patent. Church lands were granted to government officials and cronies, most notably Marshal Henry Bagenal, and a garrison was established at Monaghan town. Hugh O'Neill was left aggrieved at the loss of income and influence over this neighbouring territory.

Alarm at this settlement was a major cause of the Nine Years War. Gaelic lords, who continued traditional practices, rather than keep to surrender and regrant, faced execution for treason and the conversion of their lordships into a society of property holders great and small after the English model. The partition of Monaghan survived the subsequent war and was re‐established in 1606.
