Maynooth Grant

Maynooth Grant, political controversy arising from the act of parliament (June 1845) increasing the state grant to Maynooth College from £8,928 to £26,360, with additional funds for building. The proposal, like the Charitable Bequests Act and the Queen's Colleges, was part of Peel's strategy of detaching moderate Catholics from the repeal movement. But the measure provoked strong anti‐Catholic protest, and contributed to the Conservative split that was to bring down Peel's government in June 1846.
