MacGeoghegan, James

MacGeoghegan, James (1702–64), priest and historian. Born in Co. Westmeath, he studied at Reims, where he was ordained, and remained in France as one of the large body of expatriate Irish clergy working there. A three‐volume History of Ireland (1758–62), published in Paris, combines Jacobitism with Irish patriotism, asserting the royal title of the Stuarts while condemning English misgovernment of Ireland, insisting on Ireland's status as a kingdom, and praising its past cultural achievements. Available in English translation from 1831–2, the History was popular among 19th‐century Irish nationalists. John Mitchel called his History of Ireland (1868) a continuation of MacGeoghegan's work.
