MacDonnell, Finola

MacDonnell, Finola, alias Iníon Dubh (‘dark daughter’), daughter of a powerful Highland Scottish family who married Hugh O'Donnell of Tirconnell (1569), bringing a dowry of redshanks. She held onto power after the premature ageing of her husband and the kidnapping of their son, Red Hugh O'Donnell. Her exploits include the murder of Hugh O'Gallagher (1588) and the defeat of Donnell O'Donnell (1590). Her military support facilitated Red Hugh's election as O'Donnell (1592). After the Flight of the Earls, she implicated Niall Garbh O'Donnell, the enemy of her sons, in Sir Cahir O'Doherty's rebellion. She received 600 acres in the plantation of Ulster.
