MacDonagh, Thomas

MacDonagh, Thomas (1878–1916), one of the signatories of the 1916 proclamation. MacDonagh had a lifelong involvement in the Irish‐language movement. He aided Patrick Pearse in founding St Enda's School, lectured in Irish in University College, Dublin, was editor of the Irish Review, and was a founder member of the Irish Theatre. He joined the Irish Volunteers on its formation and became its director of training in 1914. He was sworn into the Irish Republican Brotherhood in 1915 and became a member of the military council which organized the rising of 1916. Like Pearse he believed in the need for a blood sacrifice to awaken the Irish nation. He was executed after the rising.
