MacCurtain, Thomas (1884–1920). As commander of the
Volunteers in Cork city MacCurtain, aided by Terence
MacSwiney, engaged in a week‐long stand‐off with the military authorities during the 1916
rising, ending with a negotiated surrender of weapons. On 30 January 1920 MacCurtain, by now commandant of the Cork No. 1 Brigade of the
IRA, was elected
Sinn Féin lord mayor of Cork. He was murdered, almost certainly by police, on 19 March.
