Lynch, Liam

Lynch, Liam (1890–1923), commander of the Cork No. 2 Brigade and the 1st Southern Division in the Anglo‐Irish War. As leader of the strongest division of the IRA, Lynch was one of the most important opponents of the Anglo‐Irish treaty. He became chief of staff of the Irregulars, but was anxious to avoid a conflict. Once the Irish Civil War had started, however, he refused to accept the possibility of defeat. As a result an end to the hostilities could be achieved only after he had been killed in action in April 1923.
