Knockdoe, battle of

Knockdoe, battle of (19 Aug. 1504), the defeat of Ulick Burke of Clanricard by Gearóid Mór FitzGerald, 8th earl of Kildare, on a punitive expedition into Connacht after Burke's seizure of Galway city. Ten thousand men took part in this largest ever battle between Irishmen; most of the fighting was undertaken by gallowglasses; about 2,000 fatalities resulted. The battle saw the first recorded use in Ireland of a handgun (see firearms), which a Dublin soldier used as a bludgeon.
