Kinsale, battle of (24 Dec. 1601), the decisive battle of the
Nine Years War. In September 1601 a Spanish expeditionary force disembarked at Kinsale but was quickly besieged by
Mountjoy. The arrival of Hugh
O'Neill and Red Hugh
O'Donnell left the crown forces trapped and dying of disease between the Irish and Spanish armies. However, the Irish were routed while mounting a disastrous dawn attack and on 2 January 1602 the Spaniards agreed to withdraw.
