Kildare, Gerald FitzGerald 9th earl of ( Gearóid Óg Kildare), (1487–1534). Garret óg, operating in the straitened conditions of the early Henrician period, never attained the greatness of his father Gearóid Mór. His three lord deputyships (1513–20, 1524–8, and 1532–4) were interspersed with periods of detention in England. He extended his family's landholdings and added to his father's list of Gaelic tributaries, but faced increasing opposition from the
Pale over
coyne and livery and a long‐running feud with Piers Butler, earl of
Ormond.
Early Tudor government in Ireland was impossible without FitzGerald's co‐operation—he frustrated
Surrey's experiment in direct rule, rendered Ormond's deputyship a failure, and had Lord Delvin kidnapped by O'Connor Faly, his son‐in‐law. In 1530 Kildare returned home with the new deputy, Sir William Skeffington, but eventually undermined him so that there was no alternative to his own reappointment. Wary of the ascendancy of Thomas Cromwell at court, Kildare began removing ordnance from Dublin Castle in August 1533. Early in 1534 he reluctantly answered a summons to England and appointed his son Thomas as his deputy. Gearóid Óg died in the Tower of London in September, the
Kildare rebellion already under way.
