Irish Times

Irish Times, founded in Dublin by Major Laurence E. Knox in 1859 as Ireland's first daily penny newspaper. Knox perceived the poor quality of the Dublin conservative papers at a time when the principles and possessions of the Protestant ascendancy were under threat. The paper quickly outstripped its conservative rivals but it was soon overtaken in circulation by the nationalist Freeman's Journal. On Knox's death in 1873, it was sold to the industrialist Sir John Arnott who also owned the Northern Whig. It is now Ireland's most widely read liberal daily paper and prints an Irish‐language column.
