Irish News Agency. Established in 1949 by Sean
MacBride with a government grant of £82,000, the agency's purpose was to channel Irish news worldwide, particularly on the issue of
partition. Although
de Valera had supported the possibilities of such an agency, an Irish News Agency run by MacBride was anathema to him and to
Fianna Fáil. The first managing director, Conor Cruise O'Brien, brought together a group of astute journalists. However, the technical limitations of the agency, and its public image as a government propaganda vehicle, made foreign news editors unwilling to buy its material. It closed in 1957.
