Iar Connacht, a district in west Co. Galway, consisting of the baronies of Moycullen and Ballynahinch and the half‐barony of Ross. Noted up to the middle of the 18th century as a wild and lawless region in which aspects of the Gaelic social order survived unchanged, it was the original centre of the
Hougher disturbances, and was described in a ‘Chorographical Description’ prepared for William
Molyneux by Roderick
O'Flaherty but not published until 1846.
