Hoche expedition

Hoche expedition. In December 1796 the Directory (see french revolution), responding to Tone's appeals, dispatched 14,450 troops on 43 vessels, commanded by General Lazare Hoche (1768–97), to Ireland. Following a disastrous storm 36 ships arrived at Bantry Bay, Co. Cork (21 Dec. 1796), but did not attempt a landing. The episode dramatically boosted United Irish numbers and morale. But the French, disillusioned at the apathetic popular response, never again committed so large a force to Ireland.
