Hidden Ireland, The (1924), a study of 18th‐century Gaelic Munster by the Gaelic revivalist Daniel Corkery. The title sums up Corkery's image of an oppressed and impoverished but culturally rich Gaelic world, coexisting with yet wholly distinct from the Ireland of the Protestant ruling class. More recent work has questioned Corkery's depiction of unrelieved poverty and his reliance on highly conservative literary sources as a reflection of social and political realities. Studies of hurling and other sports have also revealed a degree of interaction between elite and popular culture that runs counter to Corkery's model. But the idea that 18th‐century Ireland was characterized by unique cultural divisions between rulers and ruled remains an influential one.
