Hamilton, William Rowan

The Oxford Companion to Irish History | 2007 | Copyright

Hamilton, William Rowan (1805–65), mathematician. The son of a Dublin solicitor, he entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1823 as a mathematical prodigy: when an undergraduate he gave lectures (including the famous ‘Theory of Systems of Rays’, 1827) to the Royal Irish Academy. In 1827 he was appointed astronomer royal of Ireland and professor of astronomy at Trinity College, Dublin; he later received honours from scientific societies throughout the world. His finest achievements were in the algebra of quaternions, on which he published his Lectures (1853) and his Elements (1866); he also worked in optics and dynamics. Influenced by Kant, Coleridge, and Boscovich, he adopted an nti‐materialist philosophy.
