Galway, wardenship of

Galway, wardenship of. In 1484, in response to tensions between English and Irish clergy, the papacy placed the collegiate church of St Nicholas in Galway under the control of a warden elected by representatives of the town elite. There were regular quarrels over the election of wardens, as well as repeated jurisdictional disputes with the Catholic archbishop of Tuam. In 1831 the church and town were incorporated in a new diocese of Galway, later united with Kilfenora and Kilmacduagh.
