Freeman's Journal

Freeman's Journal, founded in Dublin in 1763, with Charles Lucas as a major contributor. From 1786 it was subsidized by Dublin Castle, but in 1809 it detached itself from Castle control and later supported Catholic emancipation, repeal, the Land League, and home rule. It took the side of John Redmond when the Irish parliamentary party split in 1890. In 1921 the newspaper backed the Anglo‐Irish treaty and its presses were destroyed by the anti‐treaty IRA. In 1924 it merged with the Irish Independent.
