FitzGerald, Maurice II

FitzGerald, Maurice II (c.1194–1257), 2nd baron of Offaly, justiciar of Ireland 1232–45. Through his father, Gerald FitzMaurice, he possessed Maynooth, and through his mother, Eva de Bermingham, Offaly. He came of age in 1215 and was appointed justiciar in 1232. In 1234 he led the attack on Richard Marshal on the Curragh and in 1235 he and Richard de Burgh led the conquest of Connacht. He received land in Galway, Mayo, and Sligo and built a castle and Dominican friary in the latter place. His attempts to conquer Donegal and Fermanagh failed.

In 1245 he gathered 3,000 men to fight for the king in Wales but arrived too late and lost the justiciarship. In 1248 he fought in Gascony at the bidding of Henry III. Maurice had founded a Franciscan friary at Youghal in 1224 or 1231 and he died there in the habit of a Franciscan in 1257.
