Faughart, battle of

Faughart, battle of (14 Oct. 1318), fought on a hill north of Dundalk and marking the end of the Bruce invasion. Edward Bruce, self‐proclaimed king of Ireland, was defeated and killed while marching south with an army of Scots and Irish, by some of the Anglo‐Irish gentry of Louth and townsmen of Drogheda, under the command of John de Bermingham of Tethmoy.
