Farsetmore, battle of

Farsetmore, battle of (8 May 1567), a catastrophic defeat for Shane O'Neill. Shane and his army crossed Farsetmore, a ford on the tidal section of the Swilly estuary, to re‐establish authority over Tirconnell. He was engaged by Hugh O'Donnell in a pitched battle and forced to retreat. The tide had now risen and many of O'Neill's men drowned trying to escape. Shane's losses are variously reported as 613, 1,300, and 3,000.
