Explanation, Act of (1665), passed by the Irish parliament to resolve the problems created by the Act of
Settlement. Grantees under the
Cromwellian land settlement were required to surrender one‐third of their holdings, though
Orrery and other prominent figures were exempted. The land surrendered was used to compensate those displaced by proprietors restored under the Act of Settlement or by direct royal grants, and to pay arrears owed to former royalist officers, the details being worked out by a second court of claims sitting 1666–9.
